Klaipeda district - a connection between Scandinavia and Central Europe
Klaipeda district is
located between Scandinavia and Central Europe in the West of
Lithuania. The district has a border with Latvia in the North and
Kaliningrad region (federation of Russia) in the South. Within the
country Klaipeda district borders on Telsiai and Taurage regions.
Klaipeda district is the only district of Lithuania which is located on
the coast of the Baltic sea. The biggest width of the district reaches
about 40 kilometers from East to West, and about 100 kilometers from
North to South. District transport facilities that are closely connected
to the continent are highly developed, and that makes the district
attractive to mutual flows of transit between Central Europe
and Scandinavia. Inter European corridors No. IX together with their
branch B (Klaipeda-Vilnius –Minsk-Kiev) are extended from East to West
through the district of Klaipeda together with two other European
highways E272 (Klaipeda-Palanga-Siauliai-Panevezys-Vilnius) and E85 (Klaipeda-Kaunas-Vilnius-Lvov-Bukarest-Aleksandropol).
Klaipeda is a connection where transit shipment makes up about 80% of
all shipment flows.
Klaipeda district is
famous for its inimitable water resources, therefore it is sometimes
called the kingdom of Neptune. The Nemunas is the biggest river of Lithuania flowing through the
whole country and disgorging into The Curonian Bay, that is an integral
part of nature and which is extended to the seacoasts in the East and
Neringa peninsula in the West. The river Minija is the biggest river of
the region flowing from the North to East and disgorging into the Curonian Bay.
Small boats, yachts and motor launches are often used as means of
communication that allows to experience unbelievable adventures and
unforgettable impression of wonderful views.
The coast of
Lithuania along the Baltic Sea extends 99 kilometres. There are well
saved sandy beaches that kept their primeval origin. The authentic
feeling that you are the first visitor of these nature beauties catches
you here. 50 kilometres from the seacoast, the depth is 50 meters and
the sea is shallow in comparison to the deepest places that reach even
200 meters.
Air bridges in Palanga, Nida and Klaipeda
At the moment there are
three working airports in the district where medium and small liners and
air-freighters can land. More than 50,000 passengers a year come to
Palanga airport and choose direct flights to Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg,
Oslo, Billund and Kristianstad. The expansion of this airport is
included in the national transport expansion programme and TINA
programme, paying a special attention to the flights to Moscow and St.
Petersburg.
The airports of
Nida and Klaipeda are of region importance. Comfortable gliding
conditions and especially nice views attract lots of gliders and pilots
for air tourism. Services that help people to travel by sea, air and
land makes Klaipeda and Palanga a perfect congress centre for various
